Previously, we compiled a list of Asian-American films suitable for kids that we recommend. Today, we've got some new ones for you guys to check out and support if you have the chance. These movies tend to be for an older crowd, so they may not be suitable fore really young kids.

On Saturday, our parents took us to check out the Visual Communications Asian Pacific Film Festival -- something we've known about for a while but hadn't had the chance to visit until now. After all, it's a two-week event that only happens once a year. You guessed it, folks: the Asian Pacific Film Festival features films with Asians in the cast and crew. Not only is it a pretty rare opportunity to catch Asian-Americans in the film industry, these movies (or the ones we've seen thus far) are good.

We first watched a screening of the new movie, Shanghai Calling, a feature film directed by Daniel Hsia and starring starring half-Korean actor Daniel Henney and Chinese actress/TV hostess Zhu Zhu. Henney plays Sam, a white-washed Chinese-American lawyer who is relocated to Shanghai for his job. While he's reluctant to assimilate into Chinese culture at first, he warms up to the city...and to his American relocation specialist, Amanda.

I'm not going to give away any more, but it's a fun movie that really delves into the whole American-meets-Chinese culture shock, with a twist about who is American, and who is Asian. Not sure when you'll have the chance to see it, but look for it . It's got great cross cultural appeal.

Later on Saturday, my mom and I (Eileen) went back to the film festival to watch a very different movie called Sunset Stories, directed by Ernesto Foronda and Silas Howard. It's a "dark comedy" that follows a nurse, May, as she travels to Los Angeles to retrieve bone marrow needed for a transplant back at her hospital in Boston -- with a twist, of course. All is well until May winds up running into the last person she wants to see: her ex-boyfriend, JP whom she left many years ago. The film documents the wacky ordeals of May and JP as they run around Los Angeles in search of a cooler containing the lost bone marrow. Sung Kang plays JP! (He's in Fast & Furious, Fast Five, Better Luck Tomorrow, and other Justin Lin movies). Night time Los Angeles stars itself with its diverse supporting cast of lost souls and hopeless outcasts. The movie does not have a tidy ending, leaving the audience wanting more, which is the best kind of ending, in my opinion.

Monique Curnen and Sung Kang

The tag line on the poster says the movie is about "Losing Baggage". I guess it's about losing the burden you carry with you by facing and confronting your past. For some reason, this movie speaks to me quite a bit even though I'm only a teenager. Ladies, if you're looking for a really squeal-worthy and heartwarming movie to watch with your friends, here it is. It's even got a hopelessly romantic Asian-American main character. Score!

The festival goes on for a few more days with movies from all over the Pacific rim. Because of school, I don't think I get the chance to go back this week. Not all the movies at the festival are kid friendly, but all are personal stories made with a lot purpose. There is an underlying sentiment at the festival that it is difficult to get mainstream support for Asian American indie films, so kudos to all the film makers who actually got their films made. Check out the festival and support Asian American films.:smile:

http://coolasiankids.blogspot.com/20...m-toronto.html

:cool:We know that folks in Los Angeles are enjoying the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival right now. There's been some great movies showcased at the Festival and we got to attend some of them. (More about that later). However, looking ahead towards summer fun and summer time music, we are going to blog about music today.

Living on the West Side of Southern California means that you must have tried to surf at least once in your life. In elementary school, kids would have birthday parties where we would learn to surf on the beach. During the summer holidays, after running out of good academic enrichment experiences to send us to, my parents would sign us up for surf camp. While terrifying, after a couple of summers, I am at least able to paddle out into the ocean, climb onto the surf board, and surf a short distance back before falling off.

Beach Boys music are a perennial favorite when you think about surfing. But when have you heard any good new surf music . . . until now?

Well, we've got a bit of a treat for you! We all know how hard it is to find Asian-Americans/Canadian in the media -- be it film, music, or modeling -- so it's always very special to come across a fresh new Asian-American face (or voice). This week, we'd like to introduce Art Imperial, a "one-man band project".

So far, it's released two albums, Surf Suburban EP (2011) and Cult of Love (2012) Both albums feature lazy, upbeat, beachy tunes and Art's own voice and self-produced/written/performed tunes. He wasn't kidding when he said he was a one-man band!

Art is a Filipino-Canadian inspired by the beauty of the ocean and the beach life in writing his music -- even though he's from Toronto and has "never actually surfed before". We think it's awesome that he's been able to create beautiful music inspired by his own imagination and "fantasizing about the open seas". Listening to his music, you can picture a lazy beach day under the sun, sipping pina coladas (no alcohol, of course).

Art Imperial released its second album, Cult of Love, here this month, which you can (and should) check out. We really like the song Good Times, but rest of the songs from the album are all great to listen to this summer while you're at the beach, or BBQing in the back yard.

A video featuring Hong Kong movie stars Maggie Cheung and Tony Leung dancing was dubbed with Art Imperial's single "Cult of Love" It is really cool.

Make sure you check out Art Imperial. You can thank us later (;

Have you heard of 85 Degrees Celsius. If not then you must live under a rock! It's the most popular bakery right now. 85 Degrees Celsius is famous for having pretty original pastries. This ranges from delicious chocolate bread, or a decadent cream cheese....pastry thingamabob, to a taro bun, squid ink buns (which i have not tried yet) or just plain fluffy white bread. Each time you go there there's something new. You go in and it's crazy. The store is packed with people and a giant line that usually goes out the door.
Look how packed it is!
You go into the store and you get a tray and a pair of tongs. Then you can walk around and go to the little compartments that store the pastries (which are warm inside) and pick whatever you want. You actually can see workers rushing back and forth, trying to push through the crowd to replace pastries with warm and freshly baked pastries.
Other pastry

Taro Bun
It's crazy in there though. The taro pastries they have are always good. They also have sesame buns, red bean, giant (and I mean GIANT) bagel type stuff which are actually coated in sugar and other spices. You may want to bring a few people with you. One group of people can wait in line while you pick out what pastries you want. Once you get in line, you can choose drinks from the menu. This includes smoothies, hot chocolates, boba (which I love..a different post) and their famous Sea Salt Coffee brewed perfectly to 85 degrees Celsius.
Sea Salt Coffee!

Don't want to wait in line? Don't want sweets? Then go to JJ Bakery. JJ Bakery's pretty popular too...until 85 degrees Celsius came along. They serve delicious food, that can be salty or sweet. The have really good tofu soup and Nwo Mi Fan Twan (which is kind of a rice roll filled with meat and crunchy crullers) and they have a delicious pork chashu rice bowl and noodles (including my favorite Beef Noodle Soup).
Beef Noodle Soup
JJ Bakery

Nuo mi fan tuan
Green Tea Mochi
It's so delicious, my parents came to Big Bear to visit my cousin and I, who were in a Chinese Camp (but that's another story. :D), and brought two delicious pork chashu bowls with them. We weren't allowed to eat in the cabin but we sneaked it in. They had chopsticks in the bag too. While we ate...we kinda got carried away. It wasn't our fault, you'd think that at a Chinese Camp they'd have Chinese food, but they didn't. We were getting antsy without our rice. So we took pictures of ourselves enjoying it.
Anyways, that means you have to try it. It was enough to have my cousin and I struggle through a few more days trying to speak Chinese (just kidding, it was actually pretty fun...but like I said that's a different story)

Hope you like these. I know I do... I really want some chinese food now. Sigh. This is what happens when you're a food critic.

Everyone must have heard of, or watched Avatar: The Last Airbender that aired on Nickelodeon from 2005 to 2008 right? It was an anime inspired cartoon series set in an Asian martial arts influenced mystical world somewhere in the far east. The main characters can manipulate earth, air, water and fire and are known as "benders". There was an epic struggle where good triumphed over evil. It was a really good show and we watched it every week on TV. When it was canceled in 2008, kids like us were sad. Many people wrote to Nick to complain . . . and apparently, the complaints worked! We almost wrote to Nick ourselves.(Personally I hate all these new stupid teenage live action shows. The best are cartoons.....ESPECIALLY STUFF LIKE THIS. I liked how the creators of Avatar totally mixed up the story completely. BUT IT'S SO AWESOME.) I would be so happy if I lived in a world like this.

Now Nick brought the Avatar back in a new series called Avatar: The Legend of Korra. The series just came out on April 14, 2012, and is set seventy years later. The story is about the new Avatar, Korra, a strong, funny, powerful, and amazing girl, (a little defiant too.. :D) who is still learning to use her bending powers. She meets her friends, Mako (handsome, and more serious firebender) and his brother Bolin, (funny and cute earthbender). Together, they face an anti-bender revolution by a group known as the Equalists led by the evil Amon who has the power to take bender's powers away.

The show is on Nick TV every Saturday at 11:00. Each episode is 30 minutes. But each episode really packs a punch. Sadly, this series is going to be much shorter than the last one... that's why there has been SO much drama in only the first 5 episodes. It's amazing. IT. IS. AMAZING. WATCH IT!!!! REALLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mr. Gene Yang
To top it off, one of my favorite comic book artists, Gene Luen Yang, (who drew the funniest version of the Monkey King story called "American Born Chinese"), is given the awesome task of writing Avatar: The Promise, a comic book series that bridge the 70 years gap between the original Avatar and the new Legend of Korra.

Eisner Award winner American Born Chinese
Gene's writing and drawings are great, so you are really in for a treat if you pick up a copy of either Avatar: The Promise, or "American Born Chinese" or both. My copy, (along with copies of Lucky Luke and Asterix comic books) just arrived in the mail through Amazon today. I will spend my weekend reading it, and watching Legend of Korra. CAN'T WAIT

EDIT: I SAW THE LEGEND OF KORRA EPISODE 5 AND I'M DYING HERE. POOR BOLIN. BUT NO I'M NOT SAYING ANYTHING BECAUSE YOU HAVE TO WATCH IT!

Christen Brown founded Victems Get Vocal where she continues to pull on {Victims} heartstrings using Zoie to scam people for money. Don’t trust Christen or Zoie. Christen does not have any feelings at all for people. She will do anything to get her way. She even kicked and punched Daisy Watts her maid and house keeper of more than twenty years. She was able to get away with it because Daisy was a little slow; mentally challenged. She kicked her and punched her repeatedly after Daisy had hurt her leg falling from a ladder while on her job at home for Christen. Daisy’s leg was really hurt but Christen made her lie on the kitchen floor on a mattress because she feared Daisy would avoid work and watch TV if she let her stay in her own bedroom. When Daisy would not get up for work because she couldn’t, Christen beat her until Orson heard Daisy screaming in pain and stopped Christen. Daisy quit shortly after that. She was abused by Christen for 22 years! Christen has passed on many of her sick traits to Zoie. It’s too bad that she has given those feelings to Zoie who is a self professed drug addict and liar. She steals when she can for her drugs or sleeps with different men. During the year before Orson left he asked Christen many times to pay back clients the monies that they were asking for; to avoid getting sued I suppose; but Christen said we have contracts; screw the clients. Judge Eskin deemed her complicit of fraud. Christen guilty of fraud in Santa Barbara court! She committed fraud scamming
adoptive parents. Now again with Victems Get Vocal site!

Victems Get Vocal is cyber stalking; yes they are doing exactly what they want people to report? Its weird but when you know who is in charge of this site you will come to realize it is based on revenge and trying to do with the internet what the D.A. already refused to do. The person who created this site is Christen Brown who ripped off many adoptive parents with her old company Adoption International Program. Now Zoie with Christen is telling lies and scamming again.! Zoie Brown is a confirmed heroin addict and pusher. She will steal or lie to support her habit. She is also a con artist. She spent years in rehab part of her deal with the court. She always used sex as a means to an end. I find it incredulous hat she says she was molested. Zoie would have sex with anyone, a really loose girl. Zoie Brown and her mother Christen Brown have launched a new web site called Victims Get Vocal. They are scamming people for money, using Zoie's sob story about being molested a total lie, because even the D.A has caught Zoie in her lies and will not prosecute Orson Mozes. She is using Orson as a reason for the judge to treat her with mercy after being arrested. Christen Brown Zoie’s adoptive mother wants revenge because Orson would not lie in court as Christen wanted him to so her innocent spouse story went out the window; she is using Zoie to get back at him while scamming people. This is the same Christen Brown who the judge found complicit of fraud. Her old company Adoption International Program scammed many adoptive parents out of money. Now she has just lost a civil case against her and finally she has to pay the victims of her adoption agency.. Please do not trust Christen Brown! I don't know why someone would represent Christen Brown as a public speaker? Big Speak of Santa Barbara represents her. She really can’t speak and is boring and just drones on. I guess her age 67 has a lot to do with it. She is also a very bad writer just copying other authors and using it as her own. None of her books have sold and she is resigned to self publishing. She acts as a very helpful person and even has a site called Yes Worldwide but she ripped off adoptive parents with her main company now defunct Adoption International Program, she went to court and was found complicit in fraud by Judge Eskin in Santa Barbara. Christen is a horrible person just Google her and you will see for your self. She is very deceitful and will do anything for money. She committed fraud on many adoptive parents with her old company Adoption International Program. She is also consumed with seeking revenge against Orson Mozes her ex spouse and partner who took the fall for her and went to prison. When Orson saw that Christen was only out for money and cared only about money he told the truth in court about Christen and blew her story of innocent spouse. Judge Eskin deemed her complicit of fraud and even stealing Zoie her adoptive daughter’s child support. She did this by using Orson’s money which was his part of the sale of their home; more than $400,000. She kept it as alimony and lawyers costs rather than for her daughter Zoie. Never mind using it as Orson thought she would to pay disgruntled clients. Orson left a letter telling her to pay his debts with his share of the profits from the sale of their house. This letter only came to light when Orson went to court! Christen kept it hidden hoping Orson would never come back or be found. Instead she blamed Orson and got immunity from prosecution and an arrest warrant was issued for Orson. The judge also makes a statement that Christen basically put herself before her daughter and should have used proceeds from the sale of the house to support their daughter.
She also with her daughter Zoie Brown is still trying to frame Orson Mozes for telling the truth and not making her out as the innocent spouse. Here is what the judge said in court. Please parents never ever give her any money no matter what site etc. she shows you or what cause! She is the worst scammer and was the force behind Adoption International Program!! Check out the news stories below. Do not trust Christen or Zoie and please do not give them any money!!!!

For my science homework, I had to draw pictures of how the body reacts when a pathogen infects the body, I got kind of carried away, and decided to learn on my own how to use Flash. After a few hours, I got the hang of it and created this flash animation about pathogens, antigens and antibodies.
Op-Ed
Hateful comments toward two Chinese graduate students killed near the campus spotlight the growing divide between haves and have-nots in China.
April 26, 2012|By Mei Fong

After USC graduate students Ming Qu and Ying Wu were shot and killed earlier this month, the Chinese student community in America was saddened, shocked and frightened.

The reaction back home was very different. The killings, which happened while Qu and Wu were sitting and talking in a BMW, unleashed a torrent of Internet vitriol in China, and it wasn't directed at the pair's attacker.

A comment on the popular site 163.com was typical: "Studying in America, driving BMW, a male and a female, let them die."

Never mind that the BMW was a secondhand model and not the $60,000 luxury model the Associated Press erroneously reported initially. Or that Qu and Wu were not especially rich or well connected: Qu's father is a manager at an insurance company, his mother a teacher. Wu's father is a police investigator and her mother a retired textile worker.

Another commenter on 163.com posted this: "We should think about why a lot of families, even the poor ones, spend a lot to send their children abroad. This is meaningless. Studying abroad only contributes to American GDP…. Stop cheating us."

The malevolence this tragedy generated grows out of deep divisions within China. The chasm between haves and have-nots is growing ever wider, and with it has come resentment that extends to the approximately 160,000 students a year — enough to populate three schools the size of UCLA — who elect to study in the United States.

Disdain for American-educated students has come only recently. During China's economic expansion in the 1980s, students educated abroad were feted and valued for the skills and knowledge they acquired, which were then scarce in China. The students were dubbed hai gui, or "sea turtles," as opposed to "land tortoises," the term for those who stayed home to get their education.

Now, thanks to a vast expansion of the higher education system, China is awash in domestically educated college graduates. And increasingly, employers in China see graduates returning from the United States as problematic hires with unrealistic salary expectations. They don't even come back with the same kind of English skills they used to because there are now so many Chinese students on U.S. campuses that they can socialize almost exclusively among themselves.

The result has been a new term to describe returning students who can't find work — hai dai, or "seaweed."

Having come from abroad to study in the United States myself (as a Malaysian citizen), I have great sympathy for the difficulty foreign students face trying to chase their dreams in an alien country.

Most Chinese graduate students come to the United States straight from college, with little or no work experience. They have usually been far more sheltered than American students of the same age. Most of those who make it to the United States to study have spent their childhoods cramming, always pointed toward the nationwide gao kao university entrance exam, a test so important that construction work is stopped, traffic diverted and parents take work leave to coddle or bully their kids through the ordeal. (Some parents have even been known to put their daughters on birth control pills so they won't be distracted with menstrual cramps during the test.)

Even the most media-savvy Chinese students have a touching naivete about what it means to study in America. A few years ago, one of the sharpest and smartest researchers at the Beijing Wall Street Journal bureau won a full scholarship to Columbia. I warned her to expect bad cellphone reception and rats and urine on the subway. She was incredulous, disbelieving. To her, America meant lattes and luxury cars.

Most Chinese students I've worked with as a lecturer in USC's Annenberg School or interviewed as a reporter have hoped to work in the United States for a few years after graduation. Many no longer succeed in that goal. The U.S. job market is brutal, and attitudes and stereotyping compound the problem.

In this clash of cultures, it is helpful to remember America's historical openness to China scholars, and the dividends it has paid. More than a century ago, the Boxer Rebellion led to the U.S. government sponsoring the first group of Chinese scholars to attend U.S. colleges. This first wave returned home to build China's railroads and steamships, won at least one Nobel Prize and helped to build Tsinghua University, China's equivalent of MIT. The first wave of sea turtles following China's economic opening in the 1980s — people such as Charles Zhang, founder of Sohu, and Robin Li, founder of Baidu — built China's Internet and helped open up the nation's information pathways.

So what about this generation, this seaweed tide?

Unlike the earlier generations of China scholars, they are not just majoring in the hard sciences. They are in creative writing programs, in art schools, even in journalism, despite media restrictions back home.

This is no small thing. Even as many Americans make the mistake of viewing China as a monolithic superpower, the Chinese, too, tend toward one-sided views of America. America the imperialist oppressor; America the violent. It's a view that Qu's and Wu's tragedy unfortunately reinforces.

But there is also another dimension to the Chinese view of America. It is a country many admire as a place of hope and possibilities and opportunity, the land that created Steve Jobs and Jeremy Lin. This is the America that draws ever-growing numbers of Chinese students, who then take home a view of the United States that refutes the stereotypes.

Such an exercise of informal diplomacy on a grand scale cannot help but change U.S.-China relations. It may even change the world.

Mei Fong, formerly a China correspondent for the Wall Street Journal, is now a lecturer at USC's Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism.

Anyway, Chyna is not Chinese and does not look Chinese. She looks part indigenous American and a mix of something else. Until corrected, Chyna be hapa.

She has drug issues, and was in celebrity rehab and picked up Mary Carey, the gubernatorial candidate of California around when Arnie got in.

Lotsa boozing and Carey went off the wagon again. She strips now and ain't in pornos. Drunktard but pays schizo mother's bills.

So Chyna is sorta bi but in that let's hit the bars, get drunk, and maybe smoke pot. No biggie.

Now I like her body but that voice, it's whiney and makes me want to stuff a gag on her mouth. >:)

Ok, my rant is done. Thanks for reading.
