Re: British Asian Actors
When I think about Asian British actors, I think about what a noticeable presence the South Asian British community holds in British cinema. This is aided by the work of such high-profile South Asian British filmmakers as screenwriters Hanif Kireishi (My Beautiful Laundrette) and Ayub Khan-Din (East Is East) and director Gurinder Chadha (Bend It Like Beckham). Their works have certainly helped to boost such South Asian British acting talents as Om Puri, Parminder Nagra, and Oscar-winner Ben Kingsley (né Krishna Bhanji). When looking at all this, I have to ask myself, "Why can't Asian Americans have a comparable presence in Hollywood?" So far, no one has gotten back to me about that.
Among East Asian British actors, the pickings look slimmer. In fact, when the British film Soursweet, based on Timoty Mo's novel, was being shot in London in 1988, the producers had to import Soon-Tek Oh and Jodi Long from the States and Sylvia Chang from Hong Kong in order to round out the cast. The only British film I know about made by East Asians about East Asian Britons is Ping Pong, directed by Po-Chih Leong. Some of the Asian actors in The Last Emperor were British. And then there's the case of Maggie Cheung, who grew up in Britain but returned to her native Hong Kong in order to carve out an acting career as an adult. There are only a few East Asian British actors that I can think of... Burt Kwouk This Manchester-born actor is probably best known for playing Cato in the Pink Panther series. He also had a role in Jet Li's Kiss of the Dragon. However, he was also the original broken-English narrator for Banzai. Tsai Chin The Shanghai-born star of The Joy Luck Club started her Western career in the British entertainment industry, including playing the title role in the original London stage production of The World of Suzie Wong (above). Her film credits include the James Bond movie You Only Live Twice ("Darling, I give you best duck"), Michaelangelo Antonioni's Blow-Up, and her role as the daughter of Fu Manchu in a series of films starring Christopher Lee. She is now based in the U.S. David Yip I can't tell you much about this native Liverpudlian, except that he's ethnically Chinese, British, an actor, and his credits include Ping Pong and the Bond film A View to a Kill. Vanessa-Mae Reportedly a violin soloist by day, this Singapore-born beauty's looks were too striking not to put in front of a camera. Her only real acting credit is as the Princess of China opposite Jason Scott Lee as Aladdin in the TV mini-series The Arabian Nights. The fact that the role was cast with someone whose career is not primarily acting might say something about a shortage of East Asian actors in Britain. Well, that's all I can really think of. Can anyone think of any others? |
